BUILDER OF THE FUTURE

Image
THE BUILDER OF THE FUTURE The Builder of the Future Moladi construction systems has developed a way in which houses and social infrastructure can be built faster and cheaper, without jeopardising the structural integrity of buildings. by Glenneis Kriel - Finweek   While most other industries have undergone tremendous change, the building and construction sector has seen little new technological breakthroughs over the past fifty years. That was until Hennie Botes, the founder of Moladi , came along.   Realising the struggles of the poor in getting good quality housing, already in the 1980s, Botes decided to do something about it. His solution was the development of a whole new building system, which he named Moladi. The system replaces the cumbersome bricklaying process with an approach similar to plastic injection moulding.   A “mould” is produced by training local unskilled labour to assemble reusable plastic injection moulded panels, commonly known as formwork. The for...

Beyond brick and mortar construction | moladi

Beyond brick and mortar construction | moladi Beyond brick and mortar construction Beyond brick and mortar construction The inefficiencies of moulding a brick or block in a mould then tasking an artisan to lay them. Then chase the walls for water and electrical services. Then relying on another artisan to plaster the walls. Dependent on the skills and ability of artisans to produce a house. At what cost? Conventional brick and mortar construction process: How many bricks or blocks are laid per day? Are the quantity of bricks or blocks laid per day the same for every day of the week? What happens when the bricklayer does not come to work? Is the mortar (dahga) mix to lay the bricks or blocks consistent? How many bricks or blocks are wasted or broken or stolen? Are walls straight plumb and square? How long to chase for electricity piping? How long to chase for water piping? How long does it take to do beam filling? How long does it take to plaster window reveals? Is plaster thic...

Modern building methods using modern building materials

Image
Modern building methods using modern building materials Modern building method modern materials Modern building methods using modern building materials Moladi Construction System aims to address the challenge by providing a scalable, low-tech and low-skilled affordable building solution using in-situ casting. Founded in 1986 by South African social entrepreneur Hennie Botes, the company aims to replace the classic brick-and-mortar construction with an easier method: using lightweight, removable and re-usable plastic formwork that are filled with a patented fast setting aerated mortar to cast entire houses on-site. The process is deliberately designed to be labour intensive and mostly uses local supplies (apart from the reusable formwork and a special additive to aerate and water proof the wall ) to boost local employment and local production without requiring prior construction experience. Helen Sauls-August - EC department owes firms R303m

Helen Sauls-August - EC department owes firms R303m for low-cost housing Helen Sauls-August According to the DA, the massive debt, which has run far in excess of 30 days, has left small firms floundering, and led to the loss of hundreds of workers due to lay-offs. The party has labelled the situation as “chaotic”. Legislation states that businesses that have completed work for the government must be paid within 30 days, yet there are payments that have not been made after more than 90 days for work in the Alfred Nzo, Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi and OR Tambo municipalities. The DA has called on the MEC for human settlements, Helen Sauls-August , to address the backlog in payments, which includes: R81-million in Alfred Nzo Municipality; R73-million in OR Tambo District Municipality; R36-million in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro; R11-million in Buffalo City Metro; R7-million in Amathole District Municipality; and R3-million in Sarah Baartman District Municipality. “A well-run government would ensu...

Build a house system

Build a house | System Build a house Build a house - Building system moladi is the world's leading house building construction technology. Construction experts are advocating for intensive and extensive adoption of innovation and low cost technology in a bid to significantly reduce the cost of materials and building processes. This is required in order to produce significant numbers of built houses. How to build a house?   "Due to the simplicity of the house building method, construction techniques and skills can be transferred in a short time. In this way, the communities benefit from affordable shelter and entrepreneurs are skilled at the same time, creating employment," Botes says.
